Pioneer DVR-2000 & DVR-7000 DVD Recorder / RW FAQ

Q: Is the DVR-2000 compatible with my U.S. television and 120 Volt power outlet?

A: Yes and yes.  It is NTSC and we provide the proper power transformer for it to

operate flawlessly here in the United Sates.

Q: This is a Japanese Domestic Model. Will the DVDs I create play back in US players?

A: Yes.  The discs you record are code-free and are playable worldwide

Q: Will this unit play back U.S. region DVDs (Top Gun, etc) ?

A:  No.  Most people use this deck for creating videos or copying videos so that isn't

a big problem.  You can buy a U.S. region DVD player for $99 these days anyway.

Q: I purchased a Pioneer DVD-R disc, version 2.0 DVD-R  disc "for authoring" in a
grey jewel case.  The unit seems to recognize it but won't record to it!

A:  No problem.  We sell various branded discs tested to work with this deck.

We have recorded to these discs with no problems and have played our recorded
disc back in DVD players from 9 manufacturers PLUS our laptop's DVD ROM.
Q: Can I add chapter marks wherever I want to:
A:  Not with DVD-R discs (or any disc in video mode). Chapters are automatically
inserted every three minutes by the deck. Chapters can be inserted anywhere when
recording DVD-RW discs in data mode but this mode is not compatible with
       standard DVD players.
Q:  Is everything in Japanese with this deck?
A:  The menus and remote are in Japanese.  We provide a full, line-by-line translation
of the manual and remote control free of charge.  The buttons and LCD on the front
of the deck are already in English

Q:  Can a DVD-RW disc also be played back in a DVD player?
A:   If it can, then it would only be with the new version 1.1 disc depicted on our site.
These discs won't be available until the end of the month so we haven't tested them.
The RW disc that currently ships with the unit is a version 1.0.  DVD-R is the media
touted to work in DVD players.  DVD-RW should work in DVD-ROM but -R  &
-RW media  generally requre different wavelenghts of lasers to read, so I would use
DVD-R for maximum compatibility (unless you know know different)
Q:  I have created a DVD-R and it plays back in the DVR-2000 but won't play back
     anywhere else!
A:  Make sure you have finalized the disc.  The instructions make it seem like you only
have to finalize and RW disc, but you must indeed finalize your -R disc as well.
Q:  Can I copy a copywrited movie to this machine?
A:  Yes and no.  NOT DIRECTLY.  Either the machine or the media (or both) won't
allow it if the source is copywrited (CSS protection, we believe).  They only way
to make a backup copy of that piece of material is to remove the encryption
using your computer's DVD ROM drive to extract the video into files on your hard
drive.  If you have a video card with a TV out, you can then play the movie out
your video card (and the sound comes out your sound card going to the recorder).
Also, from what we can tell, this unit can only record 2 channels of audio even though
it can record in Dolby Digital and DTS, so you would have stereo, not surround soudn.
Q:  Will DVD-R discs produced in this machine play back in ALL DVD players?
A:  Probably 90% or greater.  Any DVD player that can read a DVD-R disc should
do just fine.  Any player that can play back a DVD-R disc created by the S201
computer DVD writer should play back discs recorded by the 2000 as well.  I went
to a local video store and played my DVD-R disc in ALL of their machines.  I know
someone who could not play it back on his home machine, so I told him to go to his
local store to try it out.  It played back in EVERY player he tried it on.  We have
successfully tested the DVD-R created on the 2000 on U.S.  DVD players from the
      following manufacturers:
Sony, Denon, Pioneer, JVC, Aiwa, Toshiba, Yamaha, Samsung, Panasonic
    * If you do not see your DVD player in this list it simply means we have not tested it.
It PROBABLY works on your deck
    * If you are playing back your discs on a deck from a  manufacturer not listed above,
please email us at jason@dvnation.com so we can add your deck to our compatibility
      list.
Q:  Is there tax, shipping, or any other charge if I purchase from you?
A:  No.  We incur all expense and ship from Texas to you free of charge.

Sony WV-DR7 and WV-DR9 (and other DV/SVHS dual deck) FAQ

Q: Is this deck compatible with my U.S. television and 120 Volt power outlet?
A: Yes and yes.  It is NTSC and we provide the proper power transformer for it to
operate flawlessly here in the United Sates. We have used all four versions of this
deck for the past 2 years and they all work GREAT!
Q:  Why doesn't Sony import these decks?
A:  Don't know.  But but we stock them and love them.
Q:  Can you record directly to the SVHS side through the firewire port?
A:  You must first record to DV tape, then do an internal transfer from DV to SVHS
(that can be done by pressing only two buttons).  I have heard that you CAN record
directly though the firewire port to the SVHS side, but that is an undocumented feature.
We provide a line-by-line translation of the manual and it doesn't mention that.  (We
HAVE actually pulled that off but with a slightly different version of this deck (not a
DR7).  Transcoding is a obvious feature of this deck.  We thing that Sony wants you
to have to go to tape first to keep the market open for their DVMC-DA2 converter.
Q: Can you directly control the SVHS side through the firewire port?
A:  No for the same reasons as above.  You can control the DV side with your computer
or another firewire device through the firewire port.
Q:  Is this deck compatible with my ___ (fill in the blank) non-linear editing system or
       computer?
A:  Yes.  Firewire is a standard and Sony decks conform to that standard.  Everyone
has had success using this deck with various brands of NLE systems.
Q:  I don't see the WV-DR7 or WV-DR9 on the compatibility list for the NLE system
A:  That's becuase it is a Japanese Domestic model.  Some NLE companies do list
these decks, other don't.  If it lists the DHR-1000, consider that the same thing.
Q:  I talked to a rep at Sony U.S.A.  They said they have never heard of the deck.  I
pointed them to your website and they couldn't believe it!
A:  Well believe it.  I don't know why Sony doesn't offer this deck in the U.S.  Rumor
has it that its because Go Video has a patent on dual-decks, but I don't see how you
can patent that.  That would be like patenting a DVD deck and saying no one else can
    make one: .
Q: What if it breaks?
A: These units can be serviced at the Sony repair centers in Dallas and Boston (for a fee)
Q:  Is there tax, shipping, or any other charge if I purchase from you?
A:  No.  We incur all expense and ship from Texas to you free of charge.
